Camels in Syria . Numbers, types and areas of presence
The camel was once a major means of transporting people and goods but today it is raised only to take advantage of its meat and preserve it as part of the heritage and culture of the region.
The camel culture was concentrated in Syria before the revolution in several areas, most notably the Al-Hammad area near Al-Tanf, Bu Kamal in Deira Zour and Raqqa. These areas are desert and suitable for camels, in addition to areas in the villages of Hama, Daraa, eastern Guta, and Doma.
The camel breeding sector has deteriorated significantly in Syria due to the migration of breeders from unstable areas. However, most camel herds have moved to the eastern areas due to stability and safety there, although their numbers have decreased significantly in Syria since the revolution it was about 50,000 before but now no more than half.
The camel also had its own markets for trade such as the market of Doma, Hama and the markets of the eastern regions, but most of them disappeared.
As for the suffering of camel breeders, Ayed Al-Salem Al-Mana’a said, “We recently moved to the western countryside of Raqqa, although the climate is not suitable for raising camels, as they are currently fed on citrus plants, annual spores and other plants provided by the environment. Need for feed “.
Al-Mana’a added that the high cost of feed, the absence of camel markets and the lack of support for its breeders are among the main reasons for the shortage of numbers.
It is worth mentioning that the camels have many types, including light, yellow, and black, and live in desert areas, which are animals that have the ability to withstand hunger and thirst for several days.
The price of one camel, which amounts to 800 thousand Syrian pounds.
