On June 6, 2017, Our SDF initiated a major military operation to liberate Raqqa city, the main stronghold of ISIS and the capital of its alleged Caliphate. This decisive Operation marked the culmination of the “Wrath of the Euphrates” campaign, which involved thirty thousand fighters of SDF and aimed to liberate Raqqa and its surrounding areas.
During the battles in Raqqa city, ISIS employed terrorist tactics, including the use of human shields and the detention of civilians to hinder our SDF’s advance. Over the course of 134 days, the SDF fought valiantly, enduring significant losses. A total of 655 fighters of our SDF were martyred in the battles, but their sacrifices ultimately led to victory. On October 20, 2017, Raqqa was declared liberated.
Seven years later, our SDF Media Center interviewed three fighters who participated in the heroic campaign: Comrade Abu Saleh al-Hindawi, Comrade Dilsheer Kobani, and Comrade Hamza. These courageous individuals recounted the details of the fierce battles, the challenges they faced, and the injuries they sustained. They also honored their martyred comrades, who sacrificed their lives to liberate Raqqa and protect its people. The fighters expressed their unwavering commitment to continuing the legacy of their martyred comrades and ensuring the ongoing security and stability of the city.
